The commercial trucking industry has long looked to Isuzu as a leader in the medium-duty market. Its gas- and diesel-powered cab over models have consistently been the best-selling low cab forward trucks since 1986, and for good reason. And now, Isuzu is expanding its lineup with the launch of its first-ever battery electric truck – the NRR EV.

Making its debut with the 2025 model year, the Isuzu NRR EV started rolling off assembly lines in Charlotte, Michigan, in August 2024, marking a major leap forward in technology, sustainability and design for the medium-duty commercial trucking segment. Here’s everything you have to look forward to in Isuzu’s first electric chassis.

Putting the EV in “EVerything”

The new 2025 NRR EV has a lot to offer. Like its NRR gas and diesel counterparts, the electric N-Series offers robust Class 5 capability, with a 19,500-pound GVWR and payload capacity of up to 12,951 pounds. A new, modern cab design and enhanced aerodynamics maximize efficiency, while an upgraded interior and state-of-the-art technology enhance driver comfort and usability. The NRR EV can also be spec’d for your unique application, with wheelbases ranging from 132.5 to 176 inches and the ability to accommodate bodies up to 20 feet in length.

As Isuzu puts it, the NRR EV puts the EV in “EVerything.”

An Electric Powertrain Designed to Charge Forward

The Isuzu NRR EV offers exceptional flexibility for a variety of applications and routes, with four lithium-ion battery pack configurations to suit your business needs. You can choose from three, five, seven or nine battery packs, allowing you to customize the truck’s range. The nine-battery configuration provides a robust 180 kWh battery capacity, delivering up to 235 miles of driving range.

And don’t forget about that Class 5 power. The 20-kWh battery packs drive a three-phase, 150-kilowatt electric motor, generating 280 lb.-ft. of torque for impressive performance.

Isuzu NRR Battery Configuration Table

To charge all the battery packs in a reasonable amount of time, Isuzu has equipped the NRR EV with versatile charging options. It supports Level 2 AC charging, which can fully recharge the batteries in 5.5 to 10 hours, as well as Level 3 DC “fast” charging, which reduces the charging time to just 1 to 2.5 hours.

The NRR EV also features a regenerative braking system designed to capture kinetic energy and transfer it into the vehicle’s batteries, helping to preserve and replenish range as you drive. For even greater efficiency, Isuzu’s ECO Mode further extends range by limiting acceleration and reducing battery consumption.

Upgraded, More Comfortable Interior

Isuzu has thoughtfully redesigned the interior of the NRR EV with driver comfort, convenience, productivity and safety in mind. Compared to previous N-Series models, the NRR EV offers enhanced comfort with a three-across seating arrangement that comfortably accommodates up to three adults. The driver and passenger seats have been enhanced for taller drivers, with improved lumbar support for added comfort. And the steering wheel’s position and angle have been adjusted to offer a more ergonomic fit for a wider range of drivers.

The climate controls in the NRR EV have been upgraded with an electric system integrated directly into the instrument panel, offering a more intuitive and user-friendly experience. A new 7-inch color Multi-Information Display (MID) comes standard, providing an impressive range of gauges and functions. Designed to minimize eye movement for enhanced driver comfort and safety, the MID also offers multi-language support, including English, French and Spanish, ensuring greater accessibility for drivers.

The Most Efficient Isuzu Cab Ever

Designers of the NRR EV redesigned the cab exterior from the ground up, starting with an all-new frame crafted from HT540 hot-rolled steel that provides a taller frame rail and a more rigid and stronger base. From there, “cross flow” was the name of the game as engineers worked to create the quietest and most aerodynamic Isuzu cab ever.

Enhanced dynamics allow improved airflow around the cab, keeping sound to a minimum and allowing the NRR EV to cheat the wind for maximum efficiency. A new grille carries on the “smile” theme of previous Isuzu generations while directing air around the side of the cab, and a redesigned bumper improves cooling performance and reduces repair costs. Refined corner panels also contribute to improved aerodynamics without compromising the cab’s 85-degree door opening.

New Technologies

New state-of-the-art technologies have been introduced with the Isuzu NRR EV, including:

Electric Power Take-Off (ePTO): New ePTO technology “takes power off” the truck’s electric power source to drive auxiliary equipment and systems. The NRR EVs electric powertrain means no fossil fuels are needed for power take-off, a key component in promoting sustainability and reducing carbon footprint.

Enhanced Keyless Entry: Isuzu’s new keyless entry allows drivers to lock and unlock the doors and start the vehicle remotely. The system will also alert the driver if the key is left inside the cab and sound the horn and flash the turn signals to help pinpoint the truck’s location, if necessary.

Safety

Isuzu touts that the 2025 Isuzu NRR EV features the most complete range of safety features the brand has ever offered.

An Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package comes standard to improve driver, passenger and pedestrian safety as well as help reduce the number and severity of collisions. The ADAS includes impressive safety tools, including lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, following distance warnings, full-range adaptive cruise control and more.

The NRR EV also comes with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, hydraulic brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, anti-sleep regulation and electronic stability control. Standard Automatic Brake Hold keeps the truck temporarily stopped if the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal when sitting still. And because electric vehicles don’t create engine noises, speakers have been built into the front and rear of the cab to generate proximity warning sounds to alert nearby pedestrians when the truck is moving slowly or reversing.

Zero-Emission Certification and Purchasing Incentives

The Isuzu NRR EV has received zero-emissions certifications from both the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), underscoring Isuzu’s commitment to producing an electric truck that is not only highly efficient but also cleaner and environmentally friendly. These certifications allow the NRR EV to be sold in all 50 states and validate Isuzu’s adherence to stringent emissions standards and regulatory requirements set by CARB and the EPA.

The NRR EV has also been awarded California Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) eligibility by CARB. This eligibility allows customers to apply for a voucher worth up to $60,000, helping offset the cost of transitioning to zero-emissions vehicles.
